Court Upholds N.Y. Same-Sex Recognition

From UPI via BigGayNews.com

NEW YORK, Sept. 3 (UPI)

A New York judge ruled that Gov. David Paterson was right in ordering state agencies to recognize same-sex marriages legally performed elsewhere.

Although same-sex marriages cannot legally be performed in New York, Paterson said the state must recognize as valid such marriages from places were they are allowed, such as Massachusetts and Canada, if those couples come to the state, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

His view was upheld by a trial court judge in New York City. Justice Lucy Billings dismissed a lawsuit brought by dissident state legislators and anti-same-sex marriage activists, saying Paterson’s move was consistent with state law that generally recognizes marriages from other jurisdictions. The law, however, is silent on same-sex marriages, the newspaper said.

Paterson praised Billings’ ruling, saying it was “a wise and fair determination of the policy that holds valid same-sex marriages legally performed in other states.”

Gas Prices Deal Blow to Memorial Day Travelers

I’ve signed-up for an overtime shift, at work, and I am most definitely NOT going to travel for the holiday.

Here’s an article from the Oklahoman, but it applies everywhere.

Diesel prices in Concord jumped from $4.99 Wednesday, to $5.17 yesterday, to $5.27 today. Yes, $.28 in two days.

So, to the oil companies: You’ve won -- you have ALL the money -- and you’ve done it by f***ing over every other person and business in the nation! Aren’t you proud?!?

What Color Is Malay?

My girlfriend Brandi commented:
“The same “religious/Bible based” reasoning the government is and has given for their stance against gay marriage was used for their reasoning against interracial marriage. They used some quotes from the Bible that went on about the Tower of Babble, blah, blah.”
Well, since she mentioned it, here’s info on the interracial marriage ban that was struck down in 1967. Loving v. Virginia.

To sum it up: An interracial couple left Virginia to get married in Washington, D.C. since Virginia had banned it. When they returned, they were arrested, convicted and sentenced to one year in jail for “leaving State to evade law.”

In his decision, the Trial Judge wrote:
“Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix.”
The judge suspended the sentence for a period of 25 years on the condition that the Lovings leave the State and not return to Virginia together for 25 years.

The Bible vs. The Constitution

The bible is frequently used to justify discrimination against Gays & Lesbians which brings-up three important points that I’d like to make about the bible vs the Constitution:
  1. If you’re going to use the bible as the rulebook for life then it MUST taken in its entirety. You do NOT have the choice to “cherry pick” what you want to enforce and what you want to ignore. The bible is your law or it isn’t.

  2. The Constitution is a living document that evolves to guarantee rights and freedoms to the people who are governed by it. The bible is a static/dead document that was written, literally, millenniums ago and has NEVER evolved. The only changes that have been made were introduced due to translational activities.

  3. This country is made-up of a great many people -- people who don’t recognize the religions which inflict their bible upon them as law. Many, myself included, look at the bible as nothing more than a story book that was written long, long ago to convey morals during ancient times.
In short, believe in the bible if you want to, but don’t force others to follow your book. And don’t even think of using that book to create laws to inflict your religious views on others.

Supreme Court OKs Gay Marriage

Wow! My first blog entry . . . and on a very timely subject.

Today, in a 4-3 ruling, the California Supreme Court overturned a state law that allowed only opposite-sex couples to marry. The court also affirmed that heterosexual couples are in no way harmed by same-sex unions.

As expected, Radical Religious Right Theocrats are threatening to change California’s constitution to legislate their anti-gay discrimination.

Every time one of these hate-filled people gets in front of a microphone, some stupid blather comes out.

Here are my rebuttals for several of the most common arguments they make to rationalize their position . . .

“Marriage needs to be protected from gays cheapening it.”
Marriage has always been granted exclusively to heterosexuals and yet 41-43% of marriages end in divorce. There’s a tremendous amount of fighting and grief caused by its dissolution and children are usually the ones most harmed by it. It would seem to me that marriage actually needs protecting from straight people who are doing a pretty good job devaluing it on their own.

“Marriage is for having and raising children.”
Really?!? Then old straight people shouldn’t be allowed to marry because their child-bearing years have passed -- right? And infertile couples can’t get married either. Sorry, just following the RRR rules.

Many single parents and unmarried couples raise children. So, as for that argument -- FAIL!

“If gays are allowed to marry then what’s next -- will they want to marry their {insert species here}?”
Why do you intolerant whack-jobs always say this? If you’re truly worried about this then you need some serious f**king therapy because YOU are the one who’s sick!

“God created Adam & Eve not Adam & Steve.”
Please spare me this PATHETIC CRAP! If you believe that God created man in his own image -- then that means a part of God (experts say 10%) must have feelings for his fellow man.

I’m just sayin’!

{/SoapBox}

Hmmm, how did that get turned on? J/K! :)

Today’s modern generation doesn’t have a problem with LGBT persons.

The problem is with OLD people, who are scared by gay people, probably because they don’t know or have never bothered to share in the lives of their LGBT friends and family members. It’s certainly a lot easier to be nasty and exclusionary to people you don’t know.

It is time for these hate groups to move on and stop WASTING taxpayer money with endless initiatives and court challenges. The State cannot afford it -- financially nor socially.
